Graham Johnson immediately comes to mind.
He accompanied multiple singers in 39 volumes of Schubert Lieder in the Hyperion Schubert Edition.

Gerald Moore. That man was an absolute legend as an accompanying pianist.

Martin Katz is probably the finest living accompanist I've heard. Among dead ones, Michael Raucheisen was particularly good. Marc-André Hamelin is excellent, too, though he doesn't often do it.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

I have no more names to give...the ones in the preceding posts were very good vocal accompanists.

Sviatoslav Richter did a great job on that. He also had ample opportunity to learn what it is to accompany a singer since his wife, Nina Dorliac, was a singer. One example of his art (there is more on YouTube): Schreier - Richter: Gute Nacht from Schubert's Winterreise.

I'm not a fan of Richter as an accompanist to tell you the truth.

Pianists who are not great "accompanists" - whether it be of singers or instrumentalists - or great chamber music players - are not the best of pianists. Ogdon, for example, did far too little chamber music playing or partnering of other soloists, but mon Dieu was he brilliant at it! Yonty Solomon was another such. It's about taking on the entire panoply of piano playing - the pianoply, if you like; some can, many either can't or don't or won't.

Best,

Oh Alistair, how could you!  ::)

Otherwise, you're spot on.
