George Frideric Handel - Fugue HWV 433
on: December 05, 2012, 02:28:31 PM
Hi Piano Street,

This is a piece I recently performed for my 8th grade AMEB piano exam, I received a B+ for the exam.... not too bad I guess..

Anyway here it is, the Handel fugue, I'm not going to lie, this is performed quite poorly. I didn't play like this in the exam... well, I hope not

I was in a rush because I was going to get kicked out the hall shortly :-)

All the points that are needed to be exercised are obviously obvious..... More realization and communication between voices, colour changes between episodes, more rhythmic stability, more precise tempo etc... just in a rush... lol

Anyway, just take a listen, feel free to comment, judge, adjudicate, criticize or whatever.

Take care,

Brandon

I really enjoyed your performance; I've always liked this piece. Speaking personally, I'm never too concerned with the other parameters you mentioned---it just takes too much work (for an amateur) to iron all those out. Instead, I like to borrow a catchy fugue subject like this and improvise on it. Took a while to work out how to begin doing this, but it is really quite fun. I'll leave it to the other members here to help you with the finer points of performance, about which I know very little.

you obviously have the apparatus to play this very well, i think you just need to give yourself time to really guide the lines with your ear. you have some nice momments even here but you should definately re-record and audition the take (or takes) and post a version you are proud of.

also where's the prelude? this fugue is quite effective on the heels of the prelude that comes before it (this is the f minor right? i love this thing).

thansk for sharing, welcome to the board, but yeah i think even per your remarks you can (and probably) should do a another take of this.

still is pretty nice playing overall.  also when you play from memory, it's best to take the music desk off (or at least lay it flat). it does affect the amount of and quality of the sound that reaches you at the keyboard so you can (per above) guide your playing with your ear and make adjustments mid performance as needed appropriately.
