The LRSM, LTCL, LLCM, etc. exams are the licentiate-level diplomas awarded by various music schools for instrumentalists and vocalists. The standard of playing required to pass is roughly the same level after a three-year music course at a music school. For examples of Licentiate-level repertoire, please see my signature. I plan to take LTCL sometime soon.

and I might add that the exams, never mind the schools or organisations to which the abbreviations refer, are by no means standard everywhere...  One really should specify the country to which one is referring when talking about them.

I hear this thrown about a bit..  Its probably true to a degree (pure performance standard) but I'd like to think that if you passed a Bmus, you would have done a bit more than learn 4 tough works.

It's probably worth noting that the licentiate exam here in australia, the Lmus, is notoriously more difficult to pass than the Amus one (the step below)... not just because the repertoire is that bit harder, but because the examiners actually demand a really TOP performance to justify giving the award.

Yeah, I got the 3-year thing off an ABRSM-sponsored forum. I was kind of sceptical about it at first, but too many people said it for me to say it isn't true. Anyway, I'm playing 5 tough works for my LTCL. However, I'm also playing works at about the same level that are NOT for my LTCL.

Most Bmus degrees would have components that are probably not at all relevant to the grading/marking on a licentiate..  but perhaps are things you would do well to think about and study in preparation for the exam since despite not being necessary, they will make you a better musician.

..and the Lmus will be less of an uphill grind as a result.

It's kind of interesting to compare the exams being referred to -- which appear to be primarily a confirmation that indeed one can do a really good job of playing at a certain level of repertoire -- with the two examinations administered by the American Guild of Organists -- the Associates (AAGO) and the Fellow (FAGO).  Both of these do require a pretty high level of playing in a good range of repertoire (as well as hymns), but both also require improvisation (the examiners throw a hymn tune at you, and say "go for it in the style of X" -- which can be pretty terrifying!) and sight reading ("here's a nice bit of Langlais.  Carry on.  And oh yes, after that would you play these three hymns for us?") and a good familiarity with liturgy.

And no.  I never passed either one -- nowhere near good enough!

why did you take it in this age?
and why aren't you taking another? (how old are you)
what's the point of this tests if they are being taken at ae 11!!

I took it at age 11 because that is when I was ready to take it.
Most people cannot take level 8 that soon, I agree, but I don't want to sound full of myself.

US Universities and conservatories appear to rely on auditions rather than exams for entry, so they are not required. Your own exams from you country wold suffice for any that do look at exams.

If you wish to study privately, I doubt they would be required either, though it is difficult to speak for all teachers.

When you have an idea where you wish to study, the schools website will give you their formal requirements.

Which questions are you referring to?
I don't remember all the pieces I played but I do know they included a Rachmaninov prelude, a Chopin nocturne and Beethoven sonata opus 22.
