RH fingering suggestions for an exercise drill
on: December 06, 2012, 10:45:24 PM
Hello,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help, but don't wish to impose.

I have been given a drill to practice, but I cannot find a workable fingering for the right hand line.

I can't ask my teacher as they have now gone away until after Christmas, and I don't have any contact details for them.

I have uploaded the single page pdf of the piece to my SkyDrive for viewing here: https://sdrv.ms/UhrSZP

If someone could take the time to read it and suggest a correct, professional fingering, that would be great. At the moment I'm stuck doing 1,2,1 on the way up and 3,1,3 on the way down, but I think it's bad that way.

Thanks for your time, and apologies if this is not an allowed use of the forum.

Kind Regards,
Katie

I would use:

1312131212134312131212131

Yes, this is a good fingering. After trying to sightread that exercise once through, I would suggest 1313131212134312131213131 (I use 13 for the first 2 going up and 31 for the last two coming down.)

Thank you very much to you both,

Such prompt and helpful replies.
I will try both tomorrow, when the neighbours won't mind the noise.

Kind Regards,
Katie

..given that this is clearly intended to foster blues improv I would suggest that work on multiple fingerings would be appropriate..

In this case I would probably play it 1234 1234 123454321 4321 4321..  this may not be this easiest for you though.

or 1234 1234 12134314321 314321..

..if I had to fix it i mean.. in reality it probably comes out different every time..  the passage in triplets would almost certainly be different to the straight rhythm.

EDIT:
..transposition also highly recommended, if you're able.. I have no idea about your level and why this was assigned.

Thank you also.

I had tried previously to begin with 12341, and got a sequence of 1234131234145313131313131.

I will definitely try al three suggestions, and take on board the point about learning multiple methods for approaching a single solution.

Kind Regards,
Katie

Curious as to why.....

Curious as to why.....

Because ultimately, in improv, since the notes are not fixed, you may well end up on any note within the scale, on any given finger, and need to be able to continue in either direction comfortably without stalling/losing sense of pulse..

The ability would come over time though, after this kind of thing has been down in all keys, and so have patterns on the scale, not just ascend/descend...   not just a "go learn 8 different fingerings for this exact line" (though personally I've been known to try an play things like this using only 4-5 as an exercise for myself)

I would also likely have a student swing the straight 8ths here, and accent the off beat. so it sounds a bit like daaaa-DIT daaa-DIT..  and in the triplets, yya-da-DIT yya-da-DIT

OK, that makes sense. A similar thing happens when I sightread.
