Paderewski edition of Chopin, correct or wrong?
on: December 11, 2012, 06:47:40 PM
Hello,
Today I decided that I'll brush up Chopin's polonaise Op.40 no.1, but I have played it from different sheets than I have now. I don't know from what edition I have played it but there are differet sheets that in Paderewski edition...
Have you ever found in Paderewski edition wrong note? If Paderewski edition is correct, should I fix it or play it like from the first sheets?
Bach-Prelude and Fugue 2
Mozart-Sonata 545
Schubert-Klavierstucke D946 - 1, 2
Chopin-Etude 10/9, 25/12
Liszt-Un Sospiro
Rachmaninoff-Prelude 23/5, 3/2

I'm not familiar with the piece, but the Paderewski is generally considered the premier edition for Chopin, and so I would assume it is more likely to be accurate. If it is correct, you definitely should fix your wrong notes.

If you want to check, try listening to several major recordings and seeing if they do it the way the Paderewski says.

thanks for your answer.
I just found the best answer at all...I found Chopin's manuscript. I found out that none of them is 100% correct, but the Paderewski edition is more different from the original.

Chopin published with numerous publishers simultaneously.  There are often discrepancies within the first published editions and manuscripts.  Chopin was also known to continuously tweak his compositions, even after publication.

The Paderewski edition is good at making note of the variations: take a look at the notes at the back of the volumes.  There is a lot revealed in that text.

The National Edition of Chopin, published by PWM, is the current scholarly edition of Chopin works.  It is also known as the Jan Ekier edition.  You may wish to consult this as well.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
