2 Contrasting pieces for piano competition
on: December 21, 2012, 05:44:59 AM
Hi all, I have a piano competition coming up in February next year and I'd like some advice with what repertoire I should choose
It is just a small competition within my own school, and the only requirements are 2 contrasting pieces. No time requirements, and "pieces" do not have to be complete works (i.e. not an entire piano sonata). No grade level requirements either, but I'm sure higher grade pieces would impress the judges more.
Just a little background of myself: I'm 16, started the piano when I was 5 and I'm probably somewhere inbetween Grade 8 and DipABRSM level now. Span length is a comfortable 9th, and 10ths at the edges (both hands).
Here are a few pieces that I think I can do a decent job in (good technical stuff, and decent expression). The ones I've highlighted in bold are the ones I'm thinking of choosing. The ones crossed out are ones that I think are too risky
Piece 1 (Classical)
Beethoven:
Op. 14 No. 2 Sonata in G 1st mvt.
(Very confident in playing this, plus I've won a competition when I was 14 with this piece)
Op. 14 No. 1 Sonata in E 1st mvt.
Piano Sonata No. 8 (Pathetique) 1st mvt.
Piano Sonata No. 8 (Pathetique) 3rd mvt.
(My grade 8 exam piece last year, tons of practice, and 30/30 in mark sheet.)
Mozart:
Rondo Alla Turca
(risky, and it just sounds too childish)
Piece 2 (Romantic)
Chopin
Nocturne in F Minor (Op.55 No.1)
Nocturne in B (Op. 32 No.1)
(It's a toss-up between these two, love them both)
Nocturne in E Flat major (Op 9. No.2)
(I do not think I interpret this correctly, plus it is too well known)
Rachmaninoff:
Prelude in C Sharp Minor Op.3 No.2
(risky, not entirely confident with this)
I'm also open to other options but I've only got about a month and a half of time left, so hopefully 2 pieces from the lists above should suffice. What do you guys think about my choices? Thanks a lot in advance
