Hailun
on: December 25, 2012, 12:34:45 AM
Hi, I am looking forward to buy a Hailun (baby) grand. Can anybody share their knowledge of the "Hailun" brand piano? Thanks.

Watch this video, this guy will show you several reasons why to like Hailun grand pianos or baby grand pianos even. He also compares it with entry level Yamaha and Kawai pianos.

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Not everything he states in that video is correct. The duplex bar he starts out with (he uses the term "aliquot") is NOT found in almost all Bösendorfers (they experimented with it on one model only). I don't think even Blüthner uses them. It is NOT a sign of quality, since many cheap pianos do feature them, so the salesperson can pitch them. He is correct, however, what the purpose of the bar is.
Beyond this, I can say I have played a 7+ foot Hailun recently, and was positively impressed. The price was really quite amazing. I don't know about their durability though, because they are fairly new.

Thanks for all the advice!
The youtube video was very helpful.
I looked at one locally a couple of months ago, it was a baby grand and immeditately the wife said it's too small ( she said all the pianos in there were too small which isn't true as they had a rebuilt Mason and Hamlin that was 6 ft or more). All I can say is it is mighty shiny and the action is quick. I did not sit down and play the piano but just running a C chord and inverions, then the scale told me the keys were surprisingly positive feeling . It did sing loud and clear too, thought the tone was brighter than I like personally. The bass more vibrant than I expected from a baby grand .The cost was low, just looking it over quickly it seemed well made. With voicing I might have liked the piano more, or the next larger model perhaps would be more suitable..
The one thing I didn't care for was the plastic feeling key tops. Also, that shiny a finish would take some getting used to for me ( my piano is in a satin black finish and I'm pleased with that).
Course I wasn't there to buy a piano anyway ! If the video is correct and I were looking for a new piano, the 15 year warranty is a big draw I think.
That's my personal two minute assessment, which is about as long as I was at the piano for !
On another note, that Mason and Hamlin was of some interest though, I didn't dare ask the price but had I, it might have saved me the work of rebuilding my Henry F MIller some day !! They had one of those in there as well, rebuilt, newer than mine but again too small. I said to the wife, why rebuild mine if I can turn it in on one already rebuilt ? She said because it's too small. And of course she is correct. Mine at 5ft 11in is perfect in our livingroom. With the top up I can make it vibrate off the walls, not sure a baby would do that. When you get a crowd in the room you want to be able to control volume ( it's surprising how humans in quantity can absorb sound)..
