Beethoven Sonata Op. 31 No. 3 (Movement I)
on: December 30, 2012, 01:26:03 AM
Recording and playing quality isn't as great as I'd hoped for, but any feedback would be greatly appreciate as auditions are coming around.

I don't know this piece, I've heard it a lot and made a very superficial sight reading of some passages but it's not a piece that I learned or anything like that, so I'll just go with the detail I noticed and that jumped at me at first hearing which where the trills from bars 22, 23 and 105, 106.
At first I thought it was a problem with trills or just an accident from the moment, but then it was odd that those were the only trills that didn't sound clear and I noticed it was because of the pedal, so my suggestion (unless your teacher has told you to do so AND has a good reason too) is that you use less pedals on those trills, or play them louder or just simply play them without pedal, because it takes out so much clarity, clarity which I believe is so important and which I completely
loved
about the rest of your interpretation/performance
. I don't believe the pedal is necessary for those trills at all.
Another quick thought I'll add is that maybe if I were to learn that piece I would probably start by thinking on making a contrast between the motif of the first bar, which you do with the
una corda
pedal, so maybe try exploiting the possibilities of contrasts? you might discover some interesting things.
PS Congrats and I hope it goes well with your auditions. You're doing a good job, keep working so it gets better!

i enjoyed all your uploads!
this is by far my most loved / favorite Beethoven sonata. i do not tire of hearing/seeing it performed.
you play this amazingly well with such artistry. I honestly cannot suggest anything really all that useful to 'make it better' as i have not yet studied it myself, and frankly your abilities (it is apparent) are far beyond mine.
on a side note. so happy to see one of those large MH pianos get some exposure. i was fortunate enough to be allowed to play one at a MH dealer about a year ago and it absolutely blew me away and reinforced my preference for these over the american ss d (for the most part). i do think you were limited either by microphone, their placement, or room acoustics (or some combination of) with regard to the sound we get on playback (i am sure the yt file compression does not help). i do believe the overall audio quality of the recorded performance is not as great as it could be and no doubt as great as it sounded it would be better in different hall conditions and/or live.

I loooove this sonata so much! The way you play it is so great! I don't have enough experience to give you any pointers on how you can improve it, but as far as I'm concerned it was perfect.

May I just say I enjoyed very much listening to your playing ... very well played!!
I had an "overdose" of this beautiful Sonata as my son played this in a recital early last year
and I must say you bring back nice memories of that recital. THANKS for posting!
btw .... do you also have the 2nd and 3rd movements?
