Hi All I Have Just Started To Learn Piano At 44.
on: January 07, 2013, 01:54:52 AM
Hey guys I bought my first piano and love it, first song I am tackling is the intro to New York State Of Mind. Awesome just love the way it sounds and he is an amazing player to me. I am finding it not too bad, I have played guitar for years and only been playing piano for about 2 weeks. Nothing sounds better to me than the sound of a piano played beautifully, I prefer rock, rhythm and blues, and jazz. Stuff that is relaxing to listen to. I thought I might try desperado next by The Eagles. Any advice or tips on practicing? thanks look forward to getting to know you all. I also want to add that I have thr 2nd revised edition of Piano For Dummies coming soon, as it was a huge help with Guitar For Dummies, and my sole source of learning is You Tube. Thanks.

Darren (Daza).

I would say get a teacher, it's a good idea if you're just starting out.

I am learning to play myself! I started with a keyboard three months ago, and got a piano for Christmas, though I've had a short setback due to wrist pain. I'll be getting a teacher soon. Unlike yourself, I have had no previous musical training. I do love the blues though :)

I've been using Alfred's adult study course, volume 1 so far and it does seem like it's a well done book.

I have voll 2 and  3 of Alfreds nonsense.  A good Teacher is the only way, plus start playing real peices and the theory is more comprehensible.  Learn the circle of fifths methodically.  Chords are neat for fake books but greater when found in a Classical peice it falls into place gracefully.  There is so much to learn and then you aren't playing and challenging your self.  I have been playing for almost 10 months studying with a great teacher and I astonish myself.  63 years ol and had incurred massive traumatic brain injury 14 years ago.  Keep on Truckin and enjoy.  Get A Teacher

Darren,

I'm older than you (54  >:( ) and started about four years ago. I've been at it about 45 minutes - 1 hour daily. I'm very disciplined, hardly ever skip a day and enjoy it every day. My most gratifying moments are when I for the first time get my fingers right on harmonies which reverberate through my body and soul; such beauty!!! At those moments I feel deep respect for the composer who came up with it.

I'll never be good; started waaaay too late, but enjoy every moment of it (and laugh a lot at myself in the process).

Keep at it  :)

Rene

Welcome to Pianostreet! No age should limit ones interest in music.

The only reason you'll never be good is that if you truly believe it yourself. Having faith in the Lord above and yourself will give you the strength to play beautifully.

I havn't even played 6 months and I'm progressing at a good tempo. Like yourself I play an hour a day. Some days shorter, some days longer. Give or take.

And my age (20) is above the expiry date for normal concert pianists, so...... Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Honestly.....If you wanted, even at age 54, you could become whatever you desire. If you played 6 hours a day and divided the hours well with breaks and all, you could be truly magnificent in a year from now. But then you'd have to give up any obligations in real life, or not, not sure.

By 6 hours practise I do mean at least an hour of agonizing scales, lmao. (I like the scales though, makes me feel alive.)
