Problem. Injury in left hand. Need advice
on: January 08, 2013, 06:32:55 AM
Hello everybody, I'll introduce myself first, my name is Pablo, 26 yrs old and i'm a basic level piano student at uni who plays not-so-basic repertoire on his own (i'm ''working'' on chopin ballade 1 at the moment), i know it's kind of rude to make a first post like this asking for help, but heh what else can i do..

The injury happened 4 days ago, not on the piano, but while i was sleeping instead, in a very stupid way actually: I was changing position like we all do while sleeping and when i moved my left arm, my  thumb somehow hit the matress and got pulled back and i felt a really big pain (not huge, or the kind that makes you scream, but significant anyway) but only for a fraction of a second.

The pain went away immediately but when i resumed practice in the next days til today I notice  a mild decrease of my span (I mean the distance between thumb and forefinger)

The thing is I've already had an injury in my right thumb 3 years ago and it's really sad and i wanted to know if you think it's something (the span decrease) temporary and I will regain the span or not, and any advice, experience, etc will be apreciated

My experience in my right hand a tells me it wont come back, but there's a really big difference because the injury in my right thumb was a lot harder, was from a kick and it needed a plaster and everything. I'm planning to see a doctor tomorrow of course, but i need another pianists's point of view.

Thanks in advance

(I appologize for my rusty english, it's not not my first language)

@ iwishihadrachhandspan

You need to see a doctor/physiotherapist. I don't think there's anything we can do or advise from here.

I'm sorry maybe i should be more clear about what's going on. What i see is a decrease in the hability of playing an 8th effortlessly or a 9th for which i have to do a slight plus effort

My concern is in part because i read this post which i found interesting in particular in the ''What's your range? '' topic:

''10 in both hands, used to be only 9 in my left hand (shortened ligament connecting the thumb due to inactivity while being injured) but playing the piano sorted that out more or less.''

and I wanted if you guys think that's true and i should keep studying or is it the contrary.

If you have injuried yourself and are worried about it (which you seem to be) I would stop playing until I'd consulted a doctor. You only have one pair of hands, after all.
