Missing composers starting with.....
on: January 09, 2013, 03:39:33 AM
OK, this is probably a weird post, and reflective of one of my rare OCD bits, but what the heck.

My sense of completeness means I need some works from composers starting with Q, U, X, Y and Z.

Who are they? Preferably not second viennese school clones or other pointless plinkers. Ideally worthy in their own right (not just for their taxonomic rarity). And must be published!

Opol Ygouw
Opol Ygouw was a pseudonym (made up of letters from his name) of the long-lived Léopold Gouvy (1871-1968. Gouvy was a nephew of the more famous composer Théodore Gouvy (1819-98), and like his uncle was born in Lorraine, France - at his uncle's house where his father was living

phillip is so funny, he has the scores up on a 22 inch computer monitor so it can display two pages and be large enough to play from lol

scores are courtesy of  Eastman School of Music - Sibley Music Library at the University of Rochester and are public domain.

Cool. That's actually not bad.  :D

Now I'll have to put out feelers for a vintage copy. I need hardcopy so  my books don't look like they have gaps.  :-[

Oh, and if Queen counted, I'd actually be sorted for Q.  :o

Unless they're prepared to change their names, they don't count.

Who are they?

Have you tried any or all of the following? (You may be forced to replace your piano with another instrument):

Johann Joachim Quantz

Vladimir Ussachevsky

Iannis Xenakis

"Weird Al" Yankovic

Gladys Yelvington (ragtime composer; info on wikipedia only available in French)

La Monte Young

Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow

Judith Lang Zaimont

Frank Zappa

Carl Friedrich Zelter

Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich

EDIT: Also, if you start searching on wikipedia for Chinese, Japanese, etc. composers (those categories exist), then you will certainly have a wealth to add to your collection.

Thanks Paul. There are a few there I'm familiar with (at least in passing).  Unfortunately amongst those, the ones I quite like are the ones that would force the piano to be replaced and the ones that would allow me to keep the piano are, how shall I put this delicately, .... not quite my cup of tea.

I'll look into the ones I don't know.  :D

Hyperion are going to release recordings of the piano concertos by Zarzycki and Zelenski.

These are both absolute belters, especially the Zelenski.

Ustvolskaya.  Probably not your cup of tea...  but I listen to her 2 piano sonatas from time to time.

Would Xian XingHai's Yellow River Concerto count?

There are tons of Zs.  There are Zipoli and Zemlinsky.  And more old-fashioned ones such as Juliusz Zarębski.  I think I played his Balade Op. 18 before.  A bit a simplified version of Chopin and Liszt.

Q: Roger Quilter (best known for songs, but he did write three piano etudes).
Y: Vincent Youmans of Tea for Two fame.
Z: Zemlinksy is probably the most famous; there's Geza Zichy (best known for being a one-handed pianist). Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman was a composer and Alkan's teacher.

I am actually considering her.   Not my cup of tea at all, but there's something there that nags at me. There are actually 6 sonatas, though, so if you like her you should search them out

Thanks everyone else - I've clearly ogot some researching to do.  :D.

Yes, me thinks the same too.  I tried reading through all 6 of them, but somehow only the first 2 stuck with me all these years.  Of course, Vedernikov's recording of the 2nd sonata helps.

Slightly off topic, but I have the same sentiments towards Gubaidulina as well.
