Chopin Minute Waltz Op.64 tied note on the second page
on: January 12, 2013, 02:25:47 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm totally confused as to what to play at the tied note on the second page.  In this video of Barenboim at 0.44 seconds he plays it as 2 notes instead of a tied note.

but Kissin in this video at 0.44 seconds plays it as a tied note

How should it be played?

Depends in the edition you are using, Chopin often gave different versions of a piece to different editorials. So, just do it like it's written on your edition.

Though there are some editions like the Henle and the red one (I can't remember the name) Urtext editions that come with annotations about those changes, not saying which one is better than the other but rather just pointing out the differences.

Thanks, my copy is by G.Schirmer and it has fingering of 5 and then 4 over the tied notes suggesting they are both to be played.  To me this is a contradiction and the tie is unnecessary, so I assume it's just an error of the edition.

I just checked it, it just means you change fingers while the key is down (you play it with 5 and while the key is down you switch to 4 without lifting the key), not that you need to do it but it becomes comfortable to some people. Usually it's written like this 5 - 4, but since it's 2 notes from different bars tied they omitted the "-". I would suggest you just play it with 4 or just 5 though, without switching, whichever you find more comfortable.

Or do it like you think sounds best  ;)
