Problem with Chopin Nocturne Op9 No1
on: October 22, 2004, 08:30:50 AM
I'm having some problems with 2 passages in this piece.
The one where there is 22/12 notes and the next on last page (20/12). The first one I split into two fragments (11/6, played as the previous phrase) and when putting them together I clearly hear a short gap between them (there is no legato).
The second passage (20/12) I did not split and learnt it as it is (20 notes in right hand, 12 in left) and it is fluent, without any gaps but I don't play it evenly (the 11th note is not played perfectly with the 7th).
What can you advise me to do? I'm afraid that when I split the second passage on two there'll be once again a short gap... And what can I do to correct the first passage?

Thanks in advance
Grzegorz

when all else fells. work out the music mathematically. Figure exactly where the notes should be meeting.

The metronome is your friend, as well.

I don't think musical mathematics and metronome will help. This is not like (4/3) in Fantasy Impromptu which the least common multiplier of 4 and 3 is only 12.
LCM(22/12) is 132. If you set your metronome at 132, it will take up to 1 minute to play this run.

You said you split it in to two groups, so it will be 11/6. That is what I did too, but I experimented something more. Here how it worked for me. I practiced this following sets hands together [3/2 4/2 4/2], [4/2 3/2 4/2] , [4/2 4/2 3/2],  [4/2 7/4] and [7/4 4/2] but also add the first note on the next group to make sure that I make no gap between those two group. Then when I tried to play [11/6] everthing runs itself. Also you might try 11/6 directly, but you have to add the first not of the next group otherwise you will end up with a gap which already happened.

Also I cooked up some cominations for 20/12 based on the same idea above.

Hope that someone might come up with a better approach.

Metronome allows you to get the left hand exact whilst fluttering around the right hand however you please. It worked for me.

Thank you for your replies!
I will try to do as you say with other sets but I wonder if I can play left hand with metronome and right hand completly different and fluent  :) But I gonna try.
