Glenn Gould - Chopin Etude Op. 10, No. 2
on: January 28, 2013, 06:49:05 PM
Can anyone tell whether or not this recording is sped up? Please don't bash me. I have a horrible ear; I probably couldn't tell a C from a G.

Probably not, but it's also not even remotely accurate. I assume this is a home recording of Gould as a young lad -- it's certainly not anything that could be released commercially. I stopped listening halfway through, I couldn't bear to listen to one of my favorite pianists bashing Chopin.

For Bach and friends... Glenn Gould, though not to my taste, was one of the best. For Chopin? Ah, no. At least in later life he had the wit to not do it... much...

Granted, the left hand accompaniment is very basic, but the etude is completely accurate and the right hand is remarkable!
This is simply dazzling in its technique.... I know this etude very well, and this is a remarkable performance (musical taste aspects notwithstanding) and anyone who could play this at this level would have a masterful technique.
The articulation, crispness, melodic line and tempo are first rate and incredible.
I didn't know he played and recorded this, but I can't think of any recording that surpasses this -- again, musical tastes notwithstanding.

Considering some other recordings which I have heard, Gould could play extremely fast. This is one of my favorite etudes and although a bit too fast for my taste (want it to be longer
it is quite an incredible performance.

It's cool that you found this.. Glenn Gould HATED Chopin and Liszt.. he almost never played anythijng by them. He was quoted saying that he only plays Chopin in a "moment of weakness"
