What is this Bach minuet in G major?
on: January 29, 2013, 11:49:18 PM
I'm looking for the BWV number for a minuet I found in the Alfred Masterwork Edition First Lessons in Bach by Walter Carroll. It's neither of the two most popular minuets in G major by Bach, BWV Anh. 114 and 116, though similar in simplicity. It's in 3/4 and begins with three high D's in the treble. Is anyone familiar with this? Thanks!

I've done some more research and neither is it from BWV 841-843. I'm attaching a picture of the page.

It's the first of a set of three minuets composed in 1720. The BWV No is 841.

Thanks j_menz, but after looking at the BWV 841 minuet it's not the same one, even though it does begin with three D's in the treble!

There are two other mystery minuets in this book that I can't identify, both in G minor. I'm attaching pictures of the first page of each. If anyone can help I would be hugely grateful.

Sorry - I posted just as you put the pic up so didn't get to compare.  Who'da thunk two wouls strat this way.

Afraid they're a mystery to me, and the Alfred's website is useless on this point.

The first g minor minuet is used in Book 2 of the Suzuki for piano. It is also included in the literature book 1 of Bastien. Not sure of the 2nd piece????

@ ragnarok

No.6 = Minuet 3 Suite BWV 822 in G Major
No.7 = Minuet 1 Suite BWV 822 in G Minor
No.8 = Minuet 2 Suite BWV 822 in G Minor

P.S.: Doing a search, first on Google (video only) and then on YouTube, for First Lessons in Bach would have given you the results in no time. The whole exam repertoire is there for ALL levels, really... ;)

Thank you so much! I actually had searched for it on YouTube but didn't come up with anything naming the piece specifically.

Is this book standard exam repertoire? I didn't know.

I may write a post some day on how to do a Google search effectively. There are some tricks of the trade that give you quality results really fast. With your "problem", the only thing I entered was the book's title + video only (strip off the junk parameters), and Mr. Alan Chan on YouTube was the first search result. I GUESSED it should be book 1 (you didn't give that info), so I refined the search in his profile on YouTube. Since he shows the music sheets in his most recent recordings (he adds "sheet music" to the title), it didn't take very long to locate the right pieces with reasonable accuracy (6, 7, & 8 in the book, judging from your pictures).

EDIT: with hindsight, a Google search for First lessons in Bach book 1 sheet music + video only (strip off the junk parameters) would have been faster. ;)

Is this book standard exam repertoire? I didn't know.

Well, not this particular book itself, of course; the contents (works by Bach). I don't work with the official grade system, but from what I understand, this could be grade 2/3.

And I will have to write a post asking about this exam system everyone talks about. Unless I'm mistaken there's nothing like it in the US.

I'll just limit the reply to the systems that are available in or close to the US.

As far as I know, in the US they have "The Achievement Program" (TAP), formerly called the National Music Certificate Program.

And here is some more about Comparing different music testing systems, where the system you probably wanted to ask about (ABRSM) is also mentioned with links provided.

Then, there are different music examination systems in Canada as well.

Wow, I had no idea The Achievement Program existed! It looks great! Thanks so much for this.
