Hi all!
I'm new to the forum, so firstly apologies if this topic has been put in the wrong section  ;D

so my question, and I appreciate it’s a question that isn't going to have a right or wrong answer!
How accomplished a pianist would I need to be to one day play the music I love?
to give 3 pieces as an example:

Liszt - un Sospiro
Liszt/Schumann - Widmung
Schubert - Impromptu op 90 no 3

I would love to one day play one if not all of these pieces (and hopefully do them justice!).
To give an idea of my current standard… I’ve been learning for just over 2 years (started when I was 20). I did play piano a little when I was a child, but never had any formal tuition, so to speak!
I passed grade 5 ABRSM (UK) practical in July 2012 and have been studying many of the Clementi Sonatinas in the past couple of months. Are the pieces I have listed a realistic goal for me to achieve?

There are hundreds of other pieces that I would one day love to play, but I do feel like I’ll never reach the standard to play them well (Chopin’s Heroic Polonaise, for example)

Sorry to go on a bit…. But thank you for reading  :)

Welcome to this forum!  I hope that you will find it as enjoyable as most of the rest of us do!  (If, on occasion, slightly wacky).

The only piece on your list to which I can speak personally is the Schubert Op. 90 #3.  It is certainly not the most difficult piece in the literature, but it is by no means easy.  I have seen it rated at Grade 8 (although I'm never sure what those grades really mean) which puts it in much the same class as most of the Chopin Nocturnes, for instance.

The pieces you have listed are all realistic goals, but I would plan on taking some time getting there.  Don't rush it!

Agreed. And don't forget to enjoy the journey.

Liszt - un Sospiro
Liszt/Schumann - Widmung
Schubert - Impromptu op 90 no 3
Chopin’s Heroic Polonaise

All definitely achievable..  just don't expect it to happen over night, and do expect to have to work for it (but really, the work is half the fun)

To answer that more directly..  in order to play them well you will need to be very accomplished - but thats also kind of the point. In order to be a truly accomplished pianist you need to learn to play big tough works such as these. Learning them is part of what leads to you becoming accomplished.

Consider looking at kuhlau's sonatinas also as a next step.. plus the constantly advised inventions by J.S. Bach.

That Schubert was handed to the 15 year old son of a friend last September to be ready along with 3 other works from different eras this coming June. All memorized for performance!

Thanks for the replies guys.... very much appreciated  :)
I fully understand that nothing is going to happen right away, and I know never to underestimate the difficulty of any piece! I'm thankfull though that I have a great teacher who is a very good judge of what to progress to next.... I'll get to my goals one day  ;D

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
