Balakirev pieces?
on: February 07, 2013, 05:45:50 AM
Not that I don't have my hands full, but I am listening to Balakirev's beautifil scherzo this morning and wonder if there is anything by him that is not very difficult (something like grade 6-7)?

Nothing that I can think of - he tended to be difficult.

You could try some Rimsky-Korsakov, who has some in that range and who pinched quite a bit from Mily.

Thanks...I really have a soft spot for Mily so I want to get some sheet music for the future. I checked my repertoire book and a couple of his nocturnes are supposed to be about the same level as the nocturne I am working on now...

They're all on IMSLP. My impression is that your repertoire book is a little optimistic on that front, but you could have a look. No 1 is probably the easiest eventually, but it's not in a friendly key and the middle section is on three staves; No 2 is more difficult, but easier to read. No 3 is listed here as 8+.

EDIT:  Good Grief! Did I just "Rank the Balakirev Nocturnes in order of difficulty"?  :o :o :-[ :-[ :-[

I don't think we had that one yet?  ;D

I looked at the scores...They are not terribly difficult otherwise, but they are long pieces and the right hand chords and octaves would make me fall flat on my face... So I just have to wait until my hand grows a bit... :P
