French songs for piano?
on: February 14, 2013, 06:40:01 PM
I've recently had a look at Satie's "Je te veux", and I must say I really like it. Does anyone now of other "chansons" in the same style?

Satie's "Je te veux" is a cabaret song that exists in three versions: voice and piano, solo piano, and orchestra.  Although he wrote several songs like this, I'm only familiar with two others arranged for solo piano:

La diva de l'Empire
Tendrement

There may be others arranged for piano, but I'm not certain.

I used to be very interested in this style and looked extensively for similar songs, but I have very little to show for it.  However, that was before I had access to the internet.  I would suggest looking for French and/or cabaret songs from around 1900.  Kurt Weill also wrote cabaret songs, and some of them are in French if your looking for that Frenchness "Je te veux" exhibits.  Again, I'm not sure if many were arranged for solo piano.

Took some finding, a little more melancholy, and not written by a Frenchman, but written about Paris, enjoy! Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Harry Warren.
