My favorite Medtner work is the piano quintet.

I heard a piano recital of around 1 hour's length featuring piano music exlusively by Medtner.
Some of the works were likeable, though most of it didn't really appeal to me. Also I don't think he's a very popular composer because a lot of his piano works look like a pain to learn...Look at a score, there are so many notes, and dense textures.
Overall,  what I heard had flashes of greatness but it was never quite sustained for a long period...Though I haven't thoroughly listened and re-listened to his music.

Ya I really like Medtner right now, but I get the feeling like it might only be a phase for me... :P

The problem with medtner he did not polish his music at all.  The score just seems be what he was thinking at the time and has no structure. its like he didnt care about finishing a phrase or recapitulating  a strong theme.  He had "flashes of greatness" as one of you said.but it doesnt go anywhere. he could have been very good if he took the time to do so.  He is like Rachmaninov without melody.  Music without melody just gets on my nerves.  Although, listen to his Sonata Ballade, its got some wonderful melodies.

If Medtner's music has no melody to you, it's either played badly or not listened well enough to.

It's a real shame that Horowitz never performed or recorded any Medtner (he knew all the sonatas and much of the chamber music).  Medtner might be as popular as Scriabin now if he had.

Horowitz recorded at least one Medtner work. The Fairy Tale in A major, Op. 51 No. 3 appears in the Complete Masterworks Recordings set on Sony.

You're absolutely right; I just wish he would have recorded or performed some of the larger works.
