Competition - Prix De Rome?
on: February 24, 2013, 12:56:57 AM
It's sad to hear that the Prix De Rome ended in 1968. Does it continue under a new name?  Are there any other major composition competitions around the world? If so what is the single most elite or top few elite competitions for composers of Piano, Symphony, Chamber, etc...?
There is so much still to be created. 88 keys, you do the math. ∞

Probably the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels, Belgium. It's been around for like forever, every year it changes between piano, violin, cello, composition and voice competitions. Ashkenazy became famous when he won it at around 17 years old IIRC, Michelangeli won it too, Gidon Kremer (violinist), etc.

You could say its the mother of all the competitions, not that it was the first one ever (I think so?) but it made music competitions a big thing worldwide. Eugene Ysaye (violinist, composer) was the one who had the original idea. There's a documentary about the competition.

EDIT: Oh sorry! I just noticed you asked "competitions for composers OF piano, etc", but anyways, Queen Elisabeth has a composition competition as well :P.
