Liszt Mephisto Waltz No. 1 (2.25.2013 run-through)
on: February 26, 2013, 01:51:05 AM
I played this piece for years, but I do it differently these days. More mellow...........and 25 seconds slower.

There are a few wrong notes, please forgive me.

Best performance! Bravo! BRAVO! I am very impressed, some of the accents were a bit much for my taste, but everything is really clean, your presto is awesome! . It is very good rhythmically and is beautiful because you play it with such feeling and simplicity, and the end is the best I have heard yet. May I ask what piano you are playing this on? Love it! Thank you for sharing that!

thank you for your kind words!

The piano is a rather dull Steinway B in a Juilliard practice room. (I am doing my Master's at Juilliard.)
I learned this piece back in 2007.........

Good, very good !

But, there is a big rhythm error in the parts beginning from 8:55. You are playing the triplets earlier than the music demands. This the first time I hear somebody play it like this and I am very astonished.

Other than this it is a very good performance. Thanks for sharing.

hehe, well, I just broaden the whole section, so the triplets are slower than the beginning of the presto section. I've always played it this way....

Then you have played it wrong all the time.

But now, since you know your error, you can play it the way it should be played (like everyone else plays it) from now on.
You not only play the triplets coming on the second beat in the left hand earlier, but every chord at the second beats of the left hand in that section too. Just count 1, 2 and begin playing the triplets and the chords at the left hand exactly when you say 2. That should solve your rhythm problem.
