I had the pleasure of being invited to his home in 1992. I stayed with him for two weeks. He was so very kind to me and a wonderful person to know. He was humble, even though his house was filled with pictures of him with many celebrities. There were Steinways in every room. Even some uprights in the closets if you believe it or not. His mother, Rildia Bee, was alive when I was there and she was so sweet. She was 94 years old and still very active. I hope he is with her now. I didn't know whether to post something this personal or not, but I would just like to say that the Van Cliburn I knew would be touched by all your kind words. He will live on in our hearts and in our music.
This is a lovely recount thanks for sharing such thoughts.

Cliburn Competition Dedicated To
Van Cliburn
Van Cliburn, the Competition's inspiration and namesake, passed away on February 27, 2013. The Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be dedicated to Mr. Cliburn, as a tribute to his devotion to young artists, and his belief in the transformative powers of music.
Carla Thompson, chairman of the board for the Cliburn, said: "The Competition that bears his name captures the essence of Van's passion for spreading the love of classical music. I join his many, many friends worldwide who will miss him dearly. During this time of mourning and reflection, it is with a renewed commitment to Van's ideals that we prepare for the upcoming Competition."
