Journey back to music.
on: February 28, 2013, 01:28:08 PM
Hello,

I've reached the age of 21 and I'm kinda worried. Well....it isn't such a confusing situation, most will tell that start practicing again. Well, here's my little story.
I went to music school by the age of 9 and I loved it, I had a tremendously good teacher who is a very good person. We have the system of 7 years in music school, then u graduate and can go on to music high school etc etc. Well my piano journey was all fine until i reached the age of 13, my mind and behaviour changed, also the perspective. I went kind of downhill, skipped lessons music theory lessons and school all the time. Started to smoke pot all day every day( i dont blame pot, i blame myself tho). I played less and less and now i can play only 1 song i've had learnt. The thing is...I've rediscovered music for my self.

I discovered FL studio, an audio workstation and then i started putting hours in it. Now i've made electronic music for almost a year. I really like the freedom of it, u can use every sound u like, every instrument or even synthesize ur own sounds.
But the time in FL studio made me think about piano much. I kinda miss knowing how to play well..lost the skill...
So yea. Re-learning piano will do tremendously good for my production in EDM scene and i miss it kind of.

so yea, but i dont know where to start...i can read notes and so on, but eventually when i just learn by sheet music..i cant improvise well(at least i think so). In conclusion i want to ask for help. I dont know where to start over again and i seeked this forum out for help.

With regards,
Synthshroom

P.S if u want to hear my 2 tunes i've meed in FL studio (www.soundcloud.com/acidshrooom . I mostly produce drum n bass) :D

I took lessons when I was a pre-teen, started cramming for university and stopped playing.

When I was 42, I took group piano lessons at the local college once a week for 20 weeks.  All I could do at the time was read music...albeit just barely.

At the end of the 20 weeks, I assigned myself 45 minutes of practice 6 days a week.  I'm now playing far more sophisticated pieces and a few weeks ago started with a very rigorous teacher.

The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, as they say...but it can also start with something as simple as picking up Alfred's basic piano books for adults or taking some lessons.

My feeling is that if you have taken lessons when you are young, there is a sense/physical memory you don't lose.
