I want to teach myself to play paino
on: February 28, 2013, 07:19:15 PM
Hi all, I was taking paino lesson for a month last year I, and I want to get back into it and teach myself instead.
I took guitar lessons for 5 years so I already have an understanding of how music works.
I have the following books i'm studying from "the older beginner piano course by james bastien. level 1 and and level 2.
What other books should I get to learn piano start to finish.
I'm not planning on being mozart here, just as a hobby i"d like to be able to play like movie soundtracks and and anime and video game soundtracks that's all, mostly slow songs, I don't care for fast ones. and be able to read sheet music for the piano.
what do i really need to learn to read sheet music for the paino. just the two books that i have or are there any more.

I got Carol Barratt's Adult piano course book 1 when I started learning last year. I already read music and play sax. It really helps if you already play an instrument. There are some nice classical pieces in it, though admittedly I got about halfway though and decided I didn't want to learn Scarborough Fair and got stuck into some Satie instead and haven't looked at it since, it is a nice easy to follow method though and teaches you the basics of music reading as it goes. You could always get the music for the tunes you want to play and try the easier parts as you progressively learn more from the Bastien. It's important to keep your interest going otherwise you may find boredom setting in doing too many exercise type pieces.

I suggest you look at The Piano For All Method which is very simple!
You begin with Chord based Popular Rhythm Style Piano which is very EASY but sounds incredibly like the ‘real thing’. This helps you to achieve a professional sound almost right from the start.
Once you are sounding great and having lots of fun (which motivates you to learn more) you can then expand step-by-step into Ballad style, Blues, Jazz, Ragtime, Improvisation and creating your own melodies. You will even learn how to read music AS you learn how to ‘play-by-ear’ and eventually you be able to play some amazing Classical pieces.

As much as you probably have some good ideas, self promotion is against the forum rules larry.
