Do you like Daniil Trifonov
on: March 15, 2013, 02:42:53 PM
He came to my high school and played the Op. 10 etudes wonderfully. What's your general take on Trifonov?

Haven't seen a lot of him. He is another highly skilled pianist who played at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, so that says a lot about how good he is.
Perfection itself is imperfection.

I do enjoy his performances, even though in almost all of his videos he's playing Chopin :P. But he certainly is one of the pianist I'll be keeping an eye on the future, I believe he does have the tools and means to be a great pianist later.

I love his performance of mozart's piano concerto no 23 in a major k 488 on youtube.  He plays it more smoothly and delicatately than you normally hear and i love it.

I have been to his concert a few months ago. He played Prokofiev. Fascinating performance! He is one of my favourite pianists now.

Obviously, when you are just 21 and you win 3 major piano competitions... it says a lot about you and quality of your play.

I think that is pretty much speaking for itself! the best version of this sonata I have ever heard!
I find his playing very unique, special and I think he sees something else in music then most people (can't explain)

I saw him at the 2011 Rubinstein Competition, which he won--he also "audience favorite" by a large margin.  My reaction at the time:  'he's very good, but that's the third time this evening we're heard the same Chopin", which is the problem with competitions*.  What really impressed me was his encore, "About Strange Lands and Peoples".   The way he just played the hell out of that superficially simple piece reminded me of Horowitz. Really.

---s.

* and to be honest, I find that a little Chopin goes a long way.

My teacher has really been talking him up. She studied with the same teacher as him at Cleveland (I think Sergei Babayan) and of course has that personal bias. That being said, I'm blown away by his total commitment to the music. Apparently Babayan told her that he has difficulty even sitting still to eat because he is so desperate to get back and practice. Anyway, I'm looking forward to following his career.

I very much enjoyed his "Rachmaniana" Suite. You can watch it here:

He came to Nashville about two weeks ago and played mozarts 9th concerto. It was so free! He played it so smooth. I loved it.

I also got a chance to meet him afterwards and talk to him about music schools. He was very nice and talked to me about professors and tips on auditions. He was very happy to talk to me.
Incredibly nice guy and a great pianist. Look up his la Campanella, he makes everything his own
Just here to lurk and cringe at my old posts now.

If anybody's interested, here's an early interview we conducted with Daniil - on family, musical process, technique, etc.
