Jazz Standards
on: March 16, 2013, 10:12:46 PM
Hello friends,

I was wondering if any of you dabble in jazz or play around town professionally? I study classically at school but I've always had a real interest in jazz and I'm in a basic class for jazz piano right now.

Anyways, what is a good list of standards, what recordings are good, and besides standards, any good modern jazz piano out there?

Thanks all.

Dunno about modern, but you could try listing to some Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Waller, Morton and Dave Brubeck for starters. The Frontline Jazz books are good for analysing styles but being transcriptions of often improvised solos you may find they meander at times. I can recommend Great Jazz Piano Solos published by Wise, ISBN  1844494780 it has a nice selection of standards and is a good starting point.

Currently learning:
Mendelssohn 19/6           Chopin 28/4
Satie Je Te Veux            Rach C#m
Poulenc Bal Fantome       Chopin 28/20
Schubert Serenade         Chopin 15/3
Chopin 10/9

Worov- That is waaay out there man, cool.

Invictious- Good stuff man, My favorite things is probably my favorite chord progression in the world. I don't know why, It just gets me.

And yeah, I've been interested in jazz forever. I played in the band in high school and stuff but once you get to college (and my school is a real strong jazz school) there are all these kids miles ahead of you. And it's not like piano is the easiest jazz instrument in the first place. I just always hear the occasional jazz major playing something really cool on the piano and I never recognize it or ask them what it is. Such a cool field of study though.

Hehe, he's a bit nuts, isn't he ? He likes to experience things. I must say I like him very much. Though, on first listening, I agree, I wasn't very fond of him.

Another of my favorite is Abdullah Ibrahim (also known as Dollar Brand). Check him out :

I'd be happy to send you a list of my top 50-100 standards.  Most of them you can find in the Real Books.  But that doesn't mean they are all perfectly correct in the Real Books.

Let me know if you are still looking for a list....

Saw big band "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy" on Woodsongs TV #1212 last night.  they have a talented pianist who takes breaks occasionally and who does the arrangements for the whole band.  Early Jazz standards, plus some originals in the 1920's style.  I believe you can download this from Woodsongs website but my computer can't play videos so I can't check that out.  He also said it was "show # 700" but KET calls it # 1212.
Inspiring, these guys started for pleasure, got to selling thousands of albums, have been touring together for 20 years.
I wish I'd recorded the show, I'd like to practice some of those licks.  Everything I do pop or jazz is so literally transcribed off the record.

Cool! I downloaded a real book, which is awesome and I've been doing some transcribing work. I figured that you just have to dig deep enough to find some solo piano gems. McCoy Tyner is the artist I'm currently transcribing. It's good stuff
