volodos versus kissin
on: October 26, 2004, 08:51:59 PM
I am extatic about todays Russian virtuosi.  I am astounded by the emotional context and techical bravura of two giants by the names of Evgeni Kissin and Arcadi Volodos.  Kissin is faithful to the score and would never dream of changing a note ( with an exception of his very early recordings.)  Almost everything he plays he treats every nuance as one of great importance.  Unfortunately many do not like the sound he produces.  I must wonder if it is a matter of taste or a matter of what is popular to say about the musician.  Volodos is one of much greater controversy.  I have come to the conclusion that he does rely on the jaw dropping  Horwitzian technique and does tend to produse extremely exciting effects.  This is not a bad thing at all.  The audiences arent always looking for Schubert of late Beethoven.  Instead he mixes both virtuoso barnstormers and introspective compositions.  In some ways he is more versatile than Kissin and in other ways he is limited by an audiences expectation for a circus transcrition of sorts.  Both are great musicians and technically I admire Kissin more and musically they are both equal.  It all depends on your taste.  Actually Lang Lang is a horrible pianist in the face of these russian princes of the keyboard.   :P :

I personally just love Kissin's playing. I DON"T CARE (bernhard) what people think about him really. I enjoy it.

I believe his earlier recordings are way better than those of now. However, he is indeed a virtuoso

i have  heard that his early stuff is phenomenal. He even speaks of how he is tired of the music industry. He hopes that now that he has established himself. THe record companies will allow him to be himself again.

I've liked what I've heard of both artists.  I'd like to hear more of Kissin.

If I could only buy a cd by one or the other ... I guess I'd save up my money and buy both.
