Apres un lecture du Dante

I like this work as much as or more than B minor.

Has anyone ever read the Divine Comedy by Dante? Is it interesting? IT seems like the highbrow thing to do before I learn the piece.  What a great piece.  I prefer if it ends piano instead of FF.

Anygood recordings? I heard concert pianist Li Wang play it and was blown away this guy is incredible.  BUt I heard John Ogdon on his GP cd and was not impressed.

Im about to listen to Barenboim's, and Dezso Ranki's recordings.
Any other suggestions or thoughts on this piece?

I honestly never really liked the work until I heard a live Cziffra performance from 1963.  Wow.  One of his greatest Liszt performances ever.

Cool. Cziffra is "Half-archangel half-demonic".  I'll check for it at school.

I first heard it performed live in 1968 by the great Reynaldo Reyes. It was one of those performances that truly are worthy of the label "unforgettable." I've heard it played at several student recitals and I have a recording by Leif Ove Andsnes,  a performance which I don't particularly like.

I can tell you that it is much more musically difficult than it is technically difficult. It's a very manageable piece, just takes a lot of effort to control dynamics and the like.

I have heard Bolet and Ranki's recordings.  I dont really like either of them, although I can tell the work is a brilliant masterpiece.  It would be great if I could get a hold of Li Wang's recording. Hey Rob, feel like sharing?

Divine Comedy?  You don't need to read it.  Read the poem "après une lecture de Dante by Victor Hugo instead.   ;)    I've read both and can say that the piece is much closer to the poem...   but I did enjoy Divine Comedy.

Cziffra is the man for this piece.

The end is  quite hard to play. If I remember correctly it is marked "prestissimo", jumps in triplets.

bump

who the hell is this capiltalized Rob47

I recently, (earlier today), got CBC radio2 in Canada to play Czifrra's recording of this.  They said it was live from 1972.  It really was extrodinary.  ON a a different level.
