Give me suggestions for a concerto !
on: March 22, 2013, 12:19:39 PM
Hi everyone !

Today my friend told me that an amateur orchestra (created by the conducting students in our conservatory) is looking for people who are interested in performing a concerto this September!
Could any of you give suggestions on which concerto to learn as I only have less than 6 month.
To give you my current level, I'm learning the pieces I stated in my signature, and I've played Mozart Concerto no 17, mov 1 and performed Rhapsody in Blue with my school orchestra 2 years ago.
Also I have very small hands, an octave is my limit.

Thank You !
Currently working on:

Bach - P&F in C# Major, BWV 872, Book II
Haydn - Sonata No.60 in C Major, Hob. XVI 50
Mendelssohn - Variations Serieuses
Debussy - Reflets dans l'eau
Ravel - Jeux d'eau

You could comfortably play the Clementi and it is a lovely piece. Also the Stamitz concerto in F is one to be considered instead of a Mozart.

Both exist in modern editions and are not too taxing on the pianist or orchestra.

Good luck

Learn the Beethoven 1st or 2nd concertos.   The 2nd is still played with major orchestras, and every conservatory music library has the "parts" for both of these.

Plus, these are the students pieces that were mandatory learning for every great pianist of the 19th century.   They were designated so for a reason.

And, I didn't see where you were not allowed to use the music.  Further, suggest to the conductor of this group that you just learn a movement from one of the above, which will still give the musicians playing experience, and also take some of the pressure off of you.

Haydn no. 11 comes to mind, as do Mozart's no. 9, or 13-15...

If I imagine the level at which a conservatoire-level piano student should be I would reckon Beethoven's concerti are well within reach in 6 months too, depending on how much time every day you will need to spend on other music...

Thank You for the suggestions everyone !
But unfortunately I decided not to do it this year since they require the whole movements to be memorized.  :-\
Maybe I'll do it next year. :)
I'm wondering which concerto is the best choice to prepare me for Romantic concertos?

Thank You

Beethoven #3 is a good selection.
