If Horowitz's Carmen Variations really published?
on: April 04, 2013, 08:33:00 AM
Hi everyone!
Who knows if the music score of Horowitz's Carmen Variations ( the version that Yujia Wang played) even really published by any publisher?
I only found there are those manuscript score and the printmusic score online of the Horowitz's Carmen Variations. (Enclosure)

Thank you so much!

There are myriads of different versions of these and each pianist who plays them appears to tweak them slightly to give different effects.

My teacher has played this in public many times and he created his own version from the extant realisations.

@Thal
Thank you Thal! Do you know the music score edition which your teacher used? I'm curious if the score published by any press company? Or if it can be bought from book store other than download from the internet?

As far as I know (please correct me if I'm wrong), Horowitz never published his variations. It's probable that he even never wrote them on paper (although I not sure on this). So every score available are transcriptions taken by ear by other persons. That would explain the little differences that exist on the different renditions, even those based on the same Horowitz version (as you know, Horowitz played different versions of this work, some famous one are 1968's Carnegie and White House's). Also, as Thal pointed, some pianist may include some embellishments of their own.

He used the 1968 version as a base, but thought it had been slightly miss transcribed, so he made corrections and amendments.
