Sheet music editions?
on: April 06, 2013, 06:33:21 PM
Hello everyone,

I really like owning book versions of sheet music and I usually get the Urtext edition, but I was recently looking for some Rachmaninoff sheet music and I found that Urtext doesn't really have Rachmaninoff's compositions. So, does anybody know the best edition for Rachmaninoff?

Urtext is not an edition, it is a statement of editorial intent.

Several publishers have Rachmaninoff's works in Urtext editions, or are in the process of completing them. Barenreiter is good, but incomplete and hideously  expensive. Belwin is cheaper and good.

Do a google search for Rachmaninoff Urtext and you'll get a large number of choices.

While a composer's works are still in copyright, then Urtext editions do not often appear as the original publishers who control the material presumably see little advantage but additional cost in issuing new editions. One sometimes sees re-engraved editions when the original plates have been worn to a state of smudged unreadability, and this is the case with some of Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky's works.

Oh, whoops :D I guess what I meant to say is the G. Henle Verlag books,  and they are usually blue. They also say Urtext on the bottom.

Rachmaninoff's Etudes-Tableaux received a great Urtext publication based on the Bärenreiter "Critical Edition" (BA 9801).

This edition is worth every penny! It includes a 1st version of Op. 39 No. 1 as well as a reconstruction of the 1st version of Op. 33 No. 4 whose manuscript has yet to show up.
