Yamaha Baby Grand Finish Nightmare
on: April 07, 2013, 05:31:04 PM
Please Help,
I have a 40+ yr old yamaha baby grand. I believe it's a model g-2. (5'8 two pedal). I believe it has a high polished Ebony finish. I've owned it a little over ten years, and since that time, any finger print, or smudge, has left a mark on it that I've never been able to clean or remove. I've never used any commercial waxes or cleaners, only dry dusting clothes for the most part. But here's the disaster... When following the advice of using a lightly damp micro fiber cloth, it leaves a bad hazy area where ever it's applied to, and the cloth ends up with a brown waxy residue. I'm not sure what the dealer applied to it before I bought it, but even breathing on the piano leaves a noticeable blemish on the
finish. Does anyone here have any experience with this? I have covered it to avoid further damage, but there are plenty of blemishes all around the sides and I feel like anything I've done this far just makes it worse.
I'll be happy to provide pictures if I can figure out how to on this forum.

To upload a picture here, you first need to upload it somewhere else, then link to it.
You can for example upload it to
postimage.org
When you upload the pic, you'll see a small version of it with a bunch of links under it. Click on the picture to enlarge it. Then right click on the picture and click "Show image" and then you'll get to a page with just the picture. Copy the URL, which should look something like s22.postimg.org/randomnumbers.jpg. In the reply window press the insert image button and paste the url. Done.
I can't help you with your other problem, but here's a funny picture I uploaded the same way. Maybe it'll raise your mood:

Ya, that sounds like a nightmare alright. It sounds almost as though someone rubbed on an opaque polish of some sort. Even Shellac isn't that sensitive. Other than refinishing with a quality product, I really don't have a suggestion on this. Maybe someone will come in with one.

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.
