Hi guys, while I was reading this passage, I came up with the question that should you warm up your fingers before daily practice or performance, and if so how do you warm them up? Do you do so just by playing different pieces, or do you do so by playing finger exercises such as Hanon? Because what I used to do is playing some Hanon, but now instead I started to play pieces that I am really good at. I don't know which way is more efficient and beneficial. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

Here is the link of the passage.

I typically warm up with the Liszt technical exercises.

I live somewhere warm. When that fails, I have heating.

I don't warm up my fingers: I warm up my brain.

I personally play scales before anything, to warm up. You should do some scales anyway, daily, to help with finger dexterity, etc.

When it comes to performing and there is no way of warming up on the piano, I used to just move my fingers a lot and aggressively, as if I'm playing air-piano, and stretch. Having an alert/active/healthy/clear mind is more important :)

I play known Scott Joplin pieces to warm up.  At age 62 the feel of where the keys are is not as stable as it was at 14. If I make any wrong notes my feel is off.   Also stretching the tendons out a little is good with some age on them.  Only octaves in the pieces I play so not an extreme stretch.
Look at an ergonomics book for industrial employees. they have a number of pre-work stretching exercises.  nothing extreme, nothing ballistic, just basic stretching.

I cannot perform without warming up. I usually play the piece being performed thinking of the technical aspect.
Clementi, Piano Sonata in G Minor, No. 3, op. 10
W. A. Mozart, Sonata for Piano Four-Hands in F Major, K. 497
Beethoven, Piano Concerto, No. 2, op. 19
