changing order of favorites in IE?
on: April 23, 2013, 12:16:38 AM
I've got a ton of bookmarks.  I want a handful at the top of the list.  I want to keep them in one folder. I don't want them sorted alphabetically.

Is there a more efficient way to drag one up to the top rather than clicking and holding and waiting forever for it to scroll up?

They're pretty much all the same now.  IE slimmed down.  Firefox updates too much.  Chrome doesn't have enough options.  I use all of them for different things.

I almost exclusively used Opera until my old laptop died, now I switched to chrome for some reason. Out of curiosity, what options that you use is it missing?

Sorry I can't help with IE, I think I accidentally opened it once last year and subsequently deleted it.

I knew someone was going to mention Opera.

That's what I've heard about Chrome.  Not enough options.  Too slim.

IE is part of the operating system.

I don't have a big preference, except for wanting to have certain favorites listed near the top without making a new folder.  I'm lazy.

Opera is for the creative but truly lazy. I made hotkeys to navigate certain pages without having to dig through shortcuts. It didn't just go straight to the site; I would push the hotkey and it would go to one page, click a url from there, go to another page, click another url to the page I wanted. I used it as much for convenience as I did for sheer entertainment. Or for pages like imgur, I would set a hotkey that would just push → every 3 seconds. SO lazy.

The reason I like chrome is actually because it's customizable. It can be slim if you want it to be, but it has so many good extensions that make it useful for whatever it is you want to do. That and the bookmark bar is pretty easy. It can also be useful in that tabs freeze instead of the entire browser. Maybe others do that now too, no idea.

Not meant as a sales pitch.

I found a way around it....

Create a new folder.  Go into the actual folders and move that folder into the favorites bar folder. Then go back in the favorites organizer and move that new folder out so it's on top.  Now you've got an empty folder. Then drag the several favorites you use into the new folder.  If you want to add any, just add them again to the favorites list.  Then go into the actual folder the copy and paste that link into the new folder.  Reorder the new folder.

Pretty backwards but it gets the job done.  Easier than dragging each little favorite up a giant list, hoping you don't accidentally drop it in the wrong place and have to drag it all over again. Or drag and accidentally drop it in the list and lose it.

If you want a select few at the top of an alphabetical list you could rename the bookmarks with a few characters in front of the name:

Bach
IMSLP
Mozart
Pianostreet

Can be reordered:

A IMSLP
A Pianostreet
Bach
Mozart

Firefox has a Tab Page now, so a selection of frequently visited sites is suggested when you open a new tab.  One click on the icon gets you to that site.

Personally, I find the search features in modern browsers more efficient then wading through a long list of bookmarks.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
