Repertoire suggestions
on: April 23, 2013, 05:54:01 AM
Hi all, I was wondering if you could give me a few suggestions as to what repertoire I should play next.  First my background:

I am a high school sophomore.  I recently have played Bach Partita 2, Mozart K 284, Liszt Liebestraume 3, and Debussy Arabesque no 1.  I have played these recently at a competition, and have done well.  However, I am looking to really push my repertoire this coming year. I was wondering if you all might have some suggestions as to next repertoire that I could play:

Something that would probably be both technically and emotionally challenging.

1) a Bach piece...most likely a Prelude/Fugue?  Any ideas?
2) a Beethoven Sonata.  What would be a good one to play?
3) some romantic era piece.  I don't know what would be good. I was thinking maybe Heroic Polonaise op 53?
4) some impressionistic or contemporary piece.

Also, I would like to play these at a future piano competition, so if you could keep that in mind that would be great :)

I know this is a lot to ask, but I really, really, really, really, really, REALLY, appreciate the time you all take to read this! :) :)

Won't your teacher want some input into this?

For the Bach, something from the WTC.  Pick any one with a three voice fugue in a friendly key that goes at a reasonably modest pace.  Choose three or four that fot that, listen to them on YT and pick the one you like best.

For the Beethoven, 2/1, the Pathetique, "Les Adieu" or "Au Therese" are probably all good starting ones; again - have a listen to each and pick the one you like best.

The Heroic Polonaise is fine, but there is a vast amount of repertoire in this area and that is one of the more often played pieces. For competitions, that is good if you really nail it - less so if you're just middling with it.  Why not look further afield. Unless you really love the HP.

For the contemporary piece - do something by someone alive!!

First, thank you for the quick response :)

Yes, my teacher actually recommended that I look for pieces and she will think of pieces as well. The categories were ones we had talked about :)

1) Do you have specific suggestions.  Which ones do judges typically like?
2) I actually have played Pathetique Mvmt 1.  Which ones do judges typically like?
3) What would be another impressive Romantic era piece that I could play?
4) I was thinking Desperate Measures by Muczynski (recently died)...your thoughts?  Too simple?

I know a lot of these questions are superficial (Which ones do judges typically like?, etc.), but I really need to get some of these competitions under my belt for college admission stuff.  I can play items that our a little out of my ability in terms of technicality and I guess emotion too, because I am planning on devoting more time to piano :)

-Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What judges (and audiences too, incidentally) "like" is to hear you play somethng that you feel something about - that speaks to you and about which you have something to say.  I can't tell you what those pieces are, but you will know when you hear them and play them.

If you play such pieces, you can show off your art - which is what makes a great pianist - not just your craft.

Hnece, go do some listening! And some read throughs.

The B-flat major and B-flat minor P&Fs from the WTC 1 are both a bit more challenging and fun to play so you could look at those.
Debussy Pour le Piano
Chopin Etude 10/5, 10/9
Beethoven Sonata 2/2, 10/3
Bach P&F no. 7 WTC 1
Ligeti Musica Ricercata 10
