Hi
Although there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to composing, it is usually considered ture that to invoke a sad mood you will want to be using minor chords.
Minor chords are triads composed of the root, the minor third, and the fifth. It is the minor third that gives them their melancholy sound.
The natural minor key is probably the best key to start with here. In this key you have minor triads built on the fisrt, the fourth, and the fifth degrees of the scale. This enables you to use common chord progressions, like I IV V whist still maintaining the somber mood you are looking for.
If you want to make the sound even darker, you could try including dimineshed triads, or full diminshed chords, and adding minor seconds and minor sixths into the mix.
Really tho, it is up to you to find the chords that fit what you are hearing in your head. To be able to do this easily and effortlessly I suggest you learn some basic music theory.
If you need anymore help with this, or have any further questions, please let me know.

Two responses: 1) use these chords 2) copy a sad song you know
1) C minor is first chord (C + E-flat + G)
F minor is second chord: F + A-flat + C
C minor is third chord ( a repeat)
G 7th is fourth chord: G + B + D + F
C minor is last chord.
2) Listen to sad songs that appeal to you. Learn to play them, learn their chords at a minimum.
