Can you recommend a piece by Brahms
on: May 05, 2013, 10:58:02 PM
The following is my fourth year recital program. I want to add in a piece by Brahms, but I can't decide! I have never formally studied any works by him. Can you recommend something that will compliment the rest of my program? Thanks! Length-wise, no longer than 10 minutes please.

Bach - Partita no. 1
Beethoven - Sonata op. 2 no. 3
Brahms - ??
Debussy - Bruyères, Des pas sur la neige, Les collines d'Anacapri
Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody no. 11

Something from Op 118?

Or 119?

Or maybe one of the Op 79 Rhapsodies?

Brahms is at his best when he is at his most dramatic so I would suggest one of the following pieces:

Ballade Op 10, No 1
Cappriccio Op 116, No 1
Ballade Op 118, No 3
Rhapsody Op 79, No 2
Scherzo Op 4

I second the op. 79 rhapsodies. I played the first one last year and it remains a highlight of my highschool piano career.
Currently Studying: Bach P&F 1 and 2 from WTC I, Mozart Sonata #6, Book I of Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, and Beethoven's Sonata No. 13

The Rhapsodies are Brahms for people who don't generally like Brahms.  ;)

I learned the Rhapsody in g minor (op. 79, no. 2) for my senior piano recital in HS. (on which I also played Beethoven op. 2, no. 3) Since then, it's been one of my go-to pieces in a crunch. It's a crowd pleaser and enjoyable to play.

I'm playing the Op. 79 No. 2 Rhapsody right now and it's really fun to play and actually pretty easy to memorize. The solo version of Hungarian Dance No. 5 is awesome too.

Instead of one piece by Brahms a set of smaller pieces by him would fit very nicely.

Capriccio, Op. 76 No.2 in B minor
Intermezzo, Op. 76 no 7 in A minor
Intermezzo, Op. 118 no. 2 in A Major
Hungarian Dance No.1 in g minor

that's way beyond 10 mins, though you could probably fit a couple of them in.

what about one of the op.117 - or you could perhaps fit two if you play them faster than radu lupu.
