Just finished my undergraduate degree
on: May 06, 2013, 04:44:06 PM
I just finished my undergraduate degree in piano performance, and I'm looking for a push in the right direction with new repertoire. As a point of reference, the program for my senior recital was:

Beethoven - Sonata in E, op 109
Brahms - Rhapsody in gm, op 79 no 2
Chopin - Ballade #2 in F
Debussy- La fille aux cheveux de lin
Prokofiev - Prelude in C
Debussy - "Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l'air du soire..."
Prokofiev - Suggestion Diabolique

I want to challenge myself but am hesitant since I won't be studying further with anyone.

That's quite "core" repertoire, which is indeed essential.

Going back in time, you need to look at Mozart, Haydn, Bach, Handel, Rameau.

Going forward in time, you can consider Bartok, Ravel, Messaien, etc. What nationality are you - living composers in your country would love some exposure.

This one's my suggestion as well.

Also, I would recommend to set a goal of learning any complete opus you like of a composer, lets say Chopin's 24 preludes, his 24 etudes, or Prokofiev's complete Visions Fugitive, etc, start building your repertoire with stuff you like, piano concertos as well.

How on earth do you finish an undergraduate degree in music and not have a list of stuff a mile long that you are just dying to get into??  :o

I was thinking about starting Chopin's op. 10, a Beethoven sonata and maybe a concerto to start. I live in the U.S. and I'm not too familiar with any contemporary American composers  :-\

This is exactly the problem. I have a list of pieces, but I'm afraid of overreaching where I am currently with my technique.

Then sort your list into three piles:  Looks Pretty Manageable; Looks Like a Challenge; You Have Got to be Kidding Me.

Then take your favourite piece from the Looks Like A Challenge Pile and do that while also working from the Looks Pretty Manageable pile at your leisure.  When you've got it up to speed, redo the lists and repeat.
