So, what now?
on: May 07, 2013, 12:33:55 AM
So yea, I'm basically a senior in high school, ready to graduate and attend college at UT Austin, which is very far from where I live. Thus, I wont have regular lessons with my piano teacher. The thing is, what do I do now? It seems as if I am already starting to slump because I feel that I wont have enough time to play during college, and I'm definitely not talented enough to actually major in music.

Any stories, suggestions, or advice from people who have somehow continued playing piano in college? The thought of quitting piano for even one whole year just to focus on my studies is pretty disconcerting, and if that's the case, it seems like one should just quit anyway then.

Help please!

Find a new teacher at Austin. If they have a music faculty, they may have some people there who also teach privately or at least may be able to point you in the right direction.

Now is the time that you may start to come to realize that piano and music itself is something that lives in your life. It may be stronger and weaker at various times of your life but it is a constant in your life overall. Don't quit, when you pick it up again it will just put you that much further behind and if music has gotten to you, to your very marrow or soul then I assure you that you will return if you quit! Accept that it may not be as strong an item in your life for a while that's all. I suggest you keep your hands and mind active at the piano vs trying to make large strides at this point in your life. Piano and music isn't going anywhere unless you decide to let it go !

I have a repeating pattern in my life of fishing and outdoors, piano/music, working with my hands, be that wood working or other similar hobbies which is the least strong of them all. Sometimes a little of each all at once or like right now full force into one, which at the moment is piano. Then add working full time, yard work, bicycling for exercise etc. At age 63 piano is still there non the less.

Just a thought.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.
