I worry about a generation of people that has the ability to just generate information from ChatGPT and other AI systems, instead of using their brain and coming up with their own justifications and reasons.

Bah.  People have always been lazy, lying cheats.

Now the group of "people" includes children.

Good for them.

Yeah, but there was never really an excuse for them to be lazy, lying cheats.

Now that AI seems to be a very easy tool to use, and practically mandatory in some universities now... how are we going to know doctors or surgeons that earned their doctorate by studying... and those who got AI to do their assignments for them?

Over the years, what makes a really good doctor has changed. In the past, being a good doctor mainly meant knowing a lot about their medical specialty. Now, being a good doctor also involves being able to find and understand information online. This shift is because medical science is advancing so quickly that it’s impossible for doctors to keep up with everything. Hundreds of papers are released every week , no human has the ability to keep up with that much information . Sooner or later (in a lot of places , currently ) diagnosis will be automated , done by AI because they are better at gathering info , Same thing for prognosis that requires physical therapy or surgery , you can automate that stuff too , the only field in medicine I dont see getting " Chat gptized " is probably therapy .

I believe you’re not questioning the doctors of the future, but are instead talking about how easy it is to have AI do your tasks, like homework or assignments , you can do stuff which required ( and was supposed to train you for ) using your brain by simply taking a picture and uploading to an ai software , making it difficult to judge who is a better doctor/engineer/etc by their grades. Though that is not the main concern with AI since fields like engineering, medicine, and law require more than just high academic grades; they necessitate substantial practical experience and comprehensive skill sets. Consequently, academic dishonesty—such as cheating during examinations—does not guarantee employment at reputable firms. Major law firms, for instance, place greater emphasis on professional competency and experience than on academic performance alone. The same principle applies across the aforementioned disciplines.

However thanks to AI,  The decline in a lot of people's intelligence , capability and even common sense is obvious , AI is like any other tool , You can use it in a way that improves you and your skills , or you can misuse it and basically ruin your life . For anyone who uses AI well , it is an incredible tool .

As a diagnostic tool, ChatBots, which I think you're calling "AI" (as do many people), is known to be poor, and unlikely to improve much.

Is it a risk for physicians to rely upon?  No, not in any factual sense.  Obviously, one is obliged to know all terminology and relationships between biological systems in the body by rote and commonplace etiologies are often augmented in practice by experience and knowledge of the patient's specific physiology.

ChatBots could be a useful tool in diagnosis by laymen.  After all, people are often foolish enough to take all sorts of advice gathered by various websites that themselves may well have been generated by an unthinking Bot, and have been since the explosion of the Web and search engines.

Of greater concern is that the exciting field of biomedical ontologies is largely being shunted aside in popular and specialist views.

I don't really give a damn what some Zoomer or Alpha physician does or says, because I'd not see a young physician ever.

Surgeons?  Well, that's just a mechanical trade.  Not worried.

Be honest - you used AI to produce that answer... didn't you?

Also, while that is an oldie but goodie... it shows how little the American people really know. Either this, or they really just found the most stupid people in America who failed to get on any type of game show, and decided to have their own game show with this little video.

Either way, it doesn't paint them in a good light.

The problem is that ChatBots are not good at "gathering [one presumes reliable and of highest quality] info," and they will not ever be unless a robust ontology, in the computer science/technical philosophy sense is developed and deployed consistently.

And deploying robotics in surgery or PT will happen just as soon as fully automated automobiles do:  which is not in any of our lifetimes, provided one insists upon complete accuracy, precision, and avoidance of harm.

I'm sure you do.

It's probable that in that time standards will be lowered enough that various societies will permit further automation at the expense of public health.

After all, compare the number of sissies who complain about tobacco use, contra those who complain about private vehicle use.

In the US, the number of deaths per annum attributable to each is roughly the same.

However, accountability for death by motor vehicle is currently a matter of criminal and civil law.

It is gravely doubtful that any such mechanism for justice will have been developed by the time of your expiry.

You need to do more research...

"Preliminary estimates for 2024 suggest approximately 39,345 people died in U.S. vehicle crashes"

"In 2024, smoking-related deaths in the U.S. were over 490,000 annually, including deaths from both direct smoking and secondhand smoke exposure"

12:1 - smoking kills far more than deaths from vehicular use.

Not even close...

Even this technical publication, which supports the inflated number of deaths attributable to tobacco use, notes the limitations of such wanton expansion of causes of death.

For example:

Quote
The evidence for many of these [secondary] causes is currently suggestive but not sufficient to infer a causal association with smoking. Second, it draws on U.S. data that include the entire population and covers a 25-year period. In contrast, prospective cohort studies rely on sample data that exclude certain segments of the U.S. population.

The main point I made, however, stands regardless of quantity of deaths attributable to tobacco use, extended contact with, e.g., asbestos and other related deleterious chemical compounds.

I must admit... I still can't understand how anyone can smoke in todays day and age. We literally know it kills people and can cause some horrific illnesses. I've had one aunt who in 3 months went from having a little trouble breathing, to dying from stage 4 lung cancer.

There are MANY videos of people on their deathbed regretting their decision to smoke; warnings on cigarette packets showing the horrors of smoking and what it can do to your body.

Like... seriously...

sh*t... I had a couple of nice pictures, but NONE of them seem to have a transparent background. HOW is it people can't format their .png files PROPERLY!!!
