Joints clicking aaargh
on: May 22, 2013, 03:54:02 PM
Playing scales and hanon/czerny studies etc, my little finger on my right hand keeps clicking every time I articulate it properly.. Does anyone else get this and is this permanent? Should I just stop going mental with the studies? Thanks :)

Hi!

Your little finger joints might be trying to tell you something: that they don't like practising Hanon and scales.  Why not see how they respond to some real music.  There will be plenty of interesting problems to work at which will really develop your technique - and your musicianship.  What grade are you on?  Perhaps I can suggest something for you to work on.  Cheers

Hi there, I've done grade 8 got 141/150 and I'm working on a diploma now :) I've played hanon and czerny for years and that's not the issue, the clicking problem is abundant in everything I play to be honest :/

Sounds about as credible as the idea that a sprained ankle would pose problems on a step machine but not in ballet. This is clearly about the manner of movement used, not about whether the fingers are executing scales or something more profoundly artistic.

My wife had a clicking finger, it actually stuck slightly and snapped free at one knuckle. The Doc said she had Classic Trigger Finger and gave her a series of cordisone shots. Been fine since.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

It has been clicking ever since I started using a really fast arpeggiated figure in my right hand during improvisation, and yes I do have a trigger finger in my left hand and I'm gonna get that sorted out soon.

You probably know this but for those who don't, the trigger finger is caused by a tendon that has a bunched up outer lining and the tendon runs through a piece of bone before going out to the fingers. That bunch is like a knot trying to slide through that bone stopping the finger from moving then it snaps through the bone and the finger is free again. The cortisone shots relieves the bunching and helps lubricate it as well but if it doesn't work then surgery is required to open the passage a bit. They also either cut away the excess lining or otherwise repair it.

Excellent. A perfectly aimed kick in the nuts for the anti hanonists.

Both of you guys could maybe be a bit more graceful in your comments but I think the point was that if there is a mechanical issue in the finger, it doesn't matter much what was played, as long as it was played similarly.

In that case, I think the only solution is to rest the fingers and not overuse them. That's the hard part :/
