modern piano with short compass?
on: June 06, 2013, 05:33:42 AM
A friend was telling me that he ran across what he thought was a modern piano in a thrift store, but noticed that it was short some keys (I don't know precisely how many, but he did count them and remembered that it was notably less than 88).  He said it was a small upright.  He played a bit on it and it sounded unextraordinary to him (he plays a bit, but doesn't necessary have the pickiest of ears, admittedly).

I have never heard of a modern acoustic piano that has a shorter compass - does anyone know anything about this?

Or could it actually be possible that a true antique cottage upright of some sort somehow made it onto a thrift store floor with no one really knowing what it was?  I find this hard to believe...

Someone clue me in!!  :)

Yes, its possible to have a modern piano with less than 88 keys.. some can be around 86, 82,, you may ever find some with even less, like 5 octaves.. but these are usually very old pianos. Its possible that someone may have gotten a hold of one of these old 19th century pianos, and refurbished it new.

but to find a modern (21st century) acoustic upright piano with a short compass (5-5 1/2 octave) would definitely be on the rare side of the spectrum,, I cannot even think of a maker.
