Did he ever write his own pieces like Rach, Chopin and others did?

yes, but those that we are aware of (or have access to) are few in number and from early in his life.

the known original works are primarily pre 1920 I think, theres some later stuff but its usually theme and variation using other composers themes, or reworkings of different compositions.

have a good dig in google, its not hard to find info on the topic.

Yes. Both Richter and Horowitz tried their hand at composition early on.

As ajspiano said, Horowitz seemed to have been slightly more interested in arrangement and transcription.

His Carmen Fantasy is a substantial work-much longer than the usual 3-4 minute version concert pianists frequently play today as a show piece.

I've been intending to explore Glenn Gould's work as a composer as well. I'm curious if anyone here has had experience either playing his music or hearing it in concert or on recording.

Thanks. I found some:

Not sure what to think of them yet.

Now that would be awesome. I'm gonna look for some Gould compositions.

I've got his Wagner transcriptions. Interesting. Good. Pain to read, but worth it.
