New Find: "Old technical exercises"
on: June 27, 2013, 10:52:26 PM
I have recently purchased both books of "advanced" studies for technique:
Master School of Virtuoso Piano Playing
which was orignally compiled by Albert Jonas and "rediscovered" by Sara Davis Buechner. Invaluable! Amazing information and studies for "advanced" students and "professionals" alike. Contributors to these books, great pianists from the past, offerred exercises they found useful. Such pianists as Busoni, Cortot, Friedhiem, Godowsky, Lhevinne contributed exercises and anecdotes you will find here. Jonas' comments and insight offer wisdom and truly do give one a sense of the real reason for practicing any of the exercises: For example. Jonas explains that exercises termed "Daily" are no such things, but rather an editor's label. He wisely states that once you get the benefit from an exericise, that is the exercise becomes "easy" for you...you consider that done and go on to the next challenge, maybe return if you need a tune up.
Can't think of any books that contain such variety and appeal. Check these out!
