Hello,
First of all, the notation is saying hold G natural , not G Sharp. I think it is in there to emphasize the tie on the G at the beginning of the bar. The tie is telling the player to sustain the G until the end of the little loop.
Same situation with the C towards the end of the bar.

1 -Yes G Natural (I Wrote # because i do not have the NATURAL character :-[)
and the question persists... why write GNatural instead of G
(G alone is Natural... in this particular case...)

2 -Why not write a "Whole note" or a "half note" instead of the "hoooold"?

thanks Ian Collett

1) They wrote that as a reminder for silly/dumb people, or for educational purposes. The 'natural' sign is just there for our VERY ungifted fellow humanbeings.. You can basically ignore it, because if you can read notes properly, the tie already implies you have to hold it.

2) Because its just a reminder that people have to carefully look at the sheet there.

1. A reminder, basically. Usually someone will write an unnecessary natural after it was in a previous measure sharp/flat, so it's a little odd, but not worth putting too much thought into.

2. Readability and/or style. If they had written it as a longer note, the page would probably be harder to read. You'd also play it differently. I think the composer wants you to play it just as if it were a short note, just holding it longer. If it were written as a longer note, you'd probably subconsciously execute it differently, most likely by giving it more emphasis. I think the composer wants you to play it exactly as you would normally play what's written, except you hold down the given notes longer.

The notation is a little unusual, but not radically so.  It could have said simple to hold the G, and in the other measure the C, but the way it is said is a little more specific.  Whichever, it is important to indicate which note in the figure is to be held.

And why a hold instead of adding a note?  Because the hold is not intended to be specific, but is intended to be a slight stretch in the pulse of the music at that point, with that specific note being the note involved in the stretch.  Note that all the other notes which are sounding at the same time are also held at that point!  If one were to add a note to the G (or C) one would have to add the same time to all the other notes -- which would mean, from the writing it down standpoint, that one would also have to change the time marking for that measure, and that measure only, to accommodate the extra note.  Which would be a mess.

The length of the hold is an artistic decision.  The idea is to give a slight emphasis to that note (without making it louder) or a slight pause in the pulse of the music at that point -- and how much to do that is entirely up to the artistic decision of the performer.  Sometimes a hold is only a barely imperceptible stretch in time.  Sometimes it can go on for quite some time, relatively speaking.  It can even be influenced by the instrument one is playing, as well as one's artistic judgement -- for example, there is a hold on a chord in one Nocturne which I play which I hold as the tone dies away, until the volume of sound remaining matches the volume of the next note I am going to play; this time differs on various instruments.

perhaps they are the same ones, that donīt understand this simple mathematical expression: 1+1=2  ;D

- yes i agree

- yes..

thanks!

Looks like an alternative to using a 5th voice to me and just notating the desired value..  musescore only allows 4 voices, perhaps that's the problem. The software does not allow the correct notation so an alternative instruction has been made.

-how much time to hold?
The length of the un-aimed tie that begins on that note.

The natural sign is likely just courtesy.
