Competition Rep for 2014 fall
on: July 08, 2013, 12:42:40 AM
Hello friends,
I am a pianist going to a competition next year. The requirements are a WTC Prelude and  fugue, a classical  sonata and an etude. The  second  round  is 20 minute romantic works, and 5 to 15 minutes of latin american music (is in Colombia so it is a requirement for the competition). Third round is 30 minutes free so what do you think about this:

 first round

Prelude and  Fugue D Major WTC II
Sonata in Eb major Hob:XVI #59 Haydn
Scriabin or  Debussy Etude ( any suggestions?)

2 round

Chopin Berceuse op. 57
Liszt Jeaux d'Eau a la Villa D'Este
Chopin Impromptu op 51( open to  any 5 minute short piece romantic)

Ginastera first Piano Sonata op 22.

Third Round
Scarlatti sonata ( suggestions?) or Couperin les Barricades Mysteriouses
Iberia book I ( Evocacion, El puerto, Fete  Dieu a Seville)
Pierre Sancan Toccatta

I am  also thinking replacing Iberia  with  the  Schumann Sonata in G minor.

What do  you think ? It is too much french/spanish?. Too many pieces? It is well balanced rep?.

Meh... I don't think you should play the most overplayed Haydn sonata there is. He wrote like 61 more, that are very beautiful, too.

Why a scriabin or Debussy, why not Chopin? Anyway, any etude is fine. As long as you play it well, it doesn't quite matter.
I'd change the second round. Play Either the Berceuse or the Jeaux d'Eau a la Villa D'Este, not both. They are too similar in style. And don't play the impromptu. It's, again, too similar. You need something that's more melodic than the ones you pick... Try to make more contrast.
The ginastera sonata is fine.

They except something to be a bit bigger in the last round. I don't really know any of the pieces you picked there... But try to pick as contrasting pieces as possible. And don't pick the Couperin. It's not a good piece for competition, since you don't show very much. A scarlatti could be good though, but then you should pick one of the bigger ones.

Good luck!
