Someone please explain to me how the British Monarch works and who presently is in "power" and who will ascend the throne.

I'm happy to be happy.

The King/Queen has no real power.  The position is just a figurehead.  The first son will take the thrown once the breeder has died.  If no son, then the daughter takes the throne.  These people have no real power.  They just have sex to keep breeding sons.  That's their job: to make babies with penises.

The real executive power lies in the prime minister.  You know, the guy with the British accent. ;D

The Brits aren't too strange with their Constitutional Monarchy system - here in Australia, our Head of State is the British Head of State i.e. the Queen of England is also Queen of Australia.

Of course, as faulty_Damper points out, the monarch has no real executive power - our Head of Government is the Prime Minister.  Since the monarch doesn't come see us very often, he/she leaves a representative here, called the Governor General.

Several years ago, we actually had a referendum to see if people wanted to stop having the Queen of England as our Head of State, and the majority of people voted "Yes" to keeping the monarchy...
