Rachmaninoff Moment Musicaux
on: July 17, 2013, 06:44:20 PM
I learned that these beautiful pieces were written very quickly and because Rach was in a financial crisis. Are these pieces considered serious repertiore? Also, is it a good idea to learn some of these to advance to his more difficult repertoire? If so, which ones and what do they practice (Speed, chords etc.)

Thanks.
Working on:
Bach Invention 7 (also Tureck's book)
Clementi Sonatina 3
Rachmaninoff Moment Musicaux no. 3
Skrjabin Prelude op.11 no.4
Joplin The Favorite Rag

It is certainly worth learning them. I never look at pieces as ways to "advance to more difficult repertoire", so I cannot answer your other questions. It's Rachmaninoff, so you get a lot back for all your effort.
Here is a description on wikipedia:
Six moments musicaux (Rachmaninoff)
and here is my favorite for these pieces - Lazar Berman:

I think these are great pieces, and a very good preparation for the Preludes and later works. Highly recommended!

Preparation?

More like the preludes are preparation for some of the moment musicals lol.

What is the difficulty of these pieces? I've played Op.3, should these be fine to learn or would they still be a challenge?

Try starting off with No. 3 and No. 6, and then work your way up from there.

So you'll get more familiar with Rachmaninoff.  No.  4 and No. 2 freaking suck dude...

To play that is lol.

Alright for real though, have you played all of op. 3, or just some?  Either way, all of op. 16 a lot harder than op. 3.  So it's gonna be a challenge.

But who cares?!  Go for it!

Although they are indeed impressive etudes, I had far more trouble projecting tone in the slower ones. :)
