looking for nice songs to play
on: February 21, 2003, 11:33:41 AM
okay, now that i don't have to practice piano anymore for exams, i'm wanting to learn some new songs. the thing with me when i buy books and music is i look at the title and the cover...see, that's a very bad thing to do. i'm looking for suggestions of songs. i like pieces in minor keys and stuff that's not too difficult to play. i'm not a very skilled player, i probably have the skill of a grade 7 or so (RCM-based). i just barely passed my grade 10 RCM exam w/ a poor 66...mind you, i was the last person there! i can play schubert's impromptu at full speed and sight-read arabesque at about 70. i've tried playing liszt's la campanella but i lost interest in it. please give me some pieces in minor keys, they don't have to be classical stuff

Good suggestion Xenia. They are the three "Gymnopédies" by Eric Satie. They are beautiful, rhythmically hypnotic and almost minimalist in their texture and metre.

I just started playing Scott Joplin's ragtime pieces. They are: "Easy Winners", "Maple Leaf Rag", and "Cascade"! I am playing those just for fun! I also play Gymnopedies by Satie too!! His other one that I play is Gnossiennes (sp?).

i have come across a series of books called "applause"....they would be perfect for your level, and they are said to be "recital pleasers" that everyone enjoys to listen to.
so far i think there are only 2 books, and i am on book one, and the pieces are probably around grade 5,6,7 (in book one, book 2 is much harder) and they sound really nice and you feel you have accomplished something when you have learned them, you can learn them in about 3 days!!!!

Songs?
I don't know. Mendelson wrote his song without words. Otherwise, if you want t "song" try Elton John.
Or, if you mean PIECE then there are a million choices. But if you're looking for hip SONGS to sing or accompany then change the name of your thread or go to "misc." Hmmmm. Well there are plenty of "songs" by Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. but this is (or so I've gathered) mostly a classical forum, so I can't help you there either. Songs. Hmmmmmmm. Nope. Nothing really comes to mind. La Campanella? You're switching from Songs to Pieces! La Campanella is a "piece" not a song. If you're looking to accompany a singer than get a Beatles song or something. Try "Yellow Submarine." But no "songs" at the difficulty of Liszt's Campanella come in mind.
Unless of course you mean Piece.
