Unidentified piano piece [answered]
on: July 26, 2013, 02:05:27 AM
I heard this little extract of a piano piece on the television a couple of weeks ago, yet, even after this time, I have still not identified it. Since it feels terribly familiar, I am confident it is well-known (probably embarrassingly so)! I would be very grateful if someone could help me.

I cannot help but notice that I have not received any replies to this question. Does this suggest that the extract originates from a less well-known piece? Since it feels annoyingly familiar, I assumed this would not be the case. I have already searched through a lot of sheet music, but with no success so far. I would be grateful for any hints, or even for suggestions of possible composers. The extract has captivated my interest, simply because I feel as if (possibly incorrectly) it should be very obvious.

Sounds like it's from the Romantic Era.

It kinda sounds like Schumann
At first I thought it could be Beethoven, but then I listened again and I am more sure that it could be Schumann

Also thought Schumann before reading keyb0ardfweak's reply.

Maybe Thal will have the score  :D
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I thought Schumann as well, but perhaps a little bit too much display is evident for the generally restrained and boring Schumann.

If it does turn out to be the Teutonic Tosser, then I have found a few seconds of his crap that I can appreciate.

Boring music? Why?
I think his music is interesting. Well constructed and with great and unique personality

Try listening his chamber music

Op. 113, Märchenbilder for piano and viola
Op. 94, Three Romances for oboe and piano
Novelleten nr. 8

And the Piano Quartet Op. 47, the Third Movement

After this, let me know if you still think Schumann is boring.

But hey, everyone has his own musical taste.. ;)

Joe, the piece in the recording is

Tchaikovsky: Piano Sonata in C Sharp Minor, Op. 80 - IV. Allegro vivo
performed by Ilya Rashkovsky

Can't seem to find it on Youtube but here it is on Amazon

Thank you very much for your help! Interestingly, I also thought it could have been a piece by Schumann, but I could not find a match by looking through the scores. I am rather surprised to see that it is by Tchaikovsky. The sonata is probably not as well-known as I anticipated, yet I doubt one could call it obscure. For anyone who might be interested, here is a recording of the movement by Viktoria Postnikova (it begins at approximately 6:10):

You're very welcome. Coincidentally I've heard this several times recently during a commercial segment on a local classical radio station, I didn't know what it was either so I actually used a phone app to identify the piece.
